We love being part of a community of passionate readers and book lovers. We also know from conversations in the shop that many of you are aspiring writers too.

We are delighted to be hosting in the bookshop, beginning this autumn, an 8-week creative non-fiction writing course from Bristol based writer and university lecturer Holly Rigby.

Whether you’re a keen novice or an experienced writer, the course is ideal for anyone who seeks to improve their writing across nonfiction genres, including:

💫 Memoir
💫 Personal essays
💫 Literary journalism
💫 Biography
💫 Review writing
💫 Writing for Substack

You will be set writing exercises and will have the unique opportunity to share your writing every week in a small group of no more than ten participants.

Holly’s work has featured in The Guardian and the Independent, she has appeared as a political commentator on the BBC, Sky News and Channel Four, and her memoir ‘Miss: when a teacher breaks the rules’ will be published by Repeater Books in 2025. She is a Lecturer in Nonfiction writing at City University.

More information, including pricing & course dates, can be found via the link below where you can also book your place.

Benjamin Myers is something of a shop favourite here. The Gallows Pole is one of the books that has been most often recommended since we opened, and Cuddy was chosen as our fiction subscription book choice when it was published in paperback earlier this year.

We are very pleased to have a (limited) stack of signed copies of his new novel, Rare Singles. This very lovely hardback edition also features one of the more impressive sprayed edges I’ve encountered (see picture below).

The blurb can be read on our website, via the link at the bottom of this email, but what you won’t get from that description of the events contained in the book’s pages is a sense of the style and rich texture of Myer’s writing – that simply has to be experienced.
